2008 Job Fair a Success
Three inches of new March snow did not discourage the dozens of applicants who arrived in Rockport last weekend for a springtime Workshops tradition: the annual Job Fair. Candidates applied for a variety of positions in the photography, film, and multimedia programs, including teaching assistants, lab technicians, internships, film technical department, and gallery coordinator.
After multiple interview sessions Friday, and a fine Workshops lunch from Executive Chef, Brad Purdy, attendees joined Rockport College and spring workshops students in an informal portfolio sharing and reel screening session that evening. The Fair wrapped up Saturday afternoon. Many prospective staffers also applied online or were interviewed at the SPE National Conference in Denver in March. There’s still one more opportunity for film department interviews: with Workshops Film Technical Director, Ted Wachs, at the B&H booth at NAB, April 14 and 15, 2008.
We want to thank all those who made such an effort to join us in Rockport for the fair and to all applicants for their enthusiastic interest in joining our summer staff for the exciting season ahead.

Workshops Expand High School Program
The Workshops’ popular Young Artists Program for high school photographers and filmmakers launches two new courses this summer. Responding to interest from Young Artists alumni and other experienced applicants, the Making Films that Make a Difference and Young Multimedia Artists workshops have been added to this year’s offerings. “We’re hearing from alumni and advanced high school artists that they’re ready to take their skills and their projects to the next level,” says Education Director, Elizabeth Greenberg, “these new programs are designed for student filmmakers to document stories that make an impact on their world, and for photographers with an interest in film to incorporate new multimedia technology into their projects.” A complete schedule of Young Artist Program workshops, including B&W and digital photography, alternative processes, film editing, screenwriting, and acting, is available on our website.

Tim Whelan Reviews Stella Johnson’s Book Al Sol
"Stella Johnson's photographs are poems weighted with grace, dignity, and compassion." -Constantine Manos
Photography, the international language, can enrich our lives and open new worlds. This is the case with Stella Johnson's first book, Al Sol: Photographs from Mexico, Nicaragua and Cameroon. Johnson has immersed herself in village life as both a passionate photographer and compassionate observer. Living with the people whom she photographs, she is able to cross the line to capture intimate moments. Working with a handheld Leica, she is free to discover extraordinary moments in ordinary situations. Moments that allow us inside… children playing without toys…women preparing food and attending to life’s daily chores…men fishing.
Johnson demonstrates her skill at filling the frame and layering complex images: her use of light and shadow brings a classic luminosity to her images. Each image stands on its own. Patience and a little bit of magic bring a sense of joy and wonder to daily village life. Her palette of human emotions is universal, reminding us of the importance of love, dignity and respect.
The accompanying text expands the story: a preface by Constantine Manos, Johnson’s writing, and a conversation about the work with Gela Garcia and Gustavo Illades. The design by Michael Alpert, fellow Workshops instructor, is eloquent.
Al Sol is a book that will engage the human spirit and grace any book collection.
