Maine Media Workshops is pleased to announce Canon’s expanded educational partnership with the school beginning in 2008. A long-time sponsor of the Workshops, Canon’s leadership has chosen to increase the company’s involvement with the school to reflect the wide range of Canon products available in the areas of digital photography, professional video, and digital printing. “Canon’s products and educational mission are a perfect fit with Maine Media Workshops’ programs and philosophy,” says Peter Tvarkunas, Canon’s Director of Education in the company’s Professional Products Marketing Division, “We want to ensure that digital video and photography students have access to equipment of the highest industry standard to enhance their educational experience.” Canon’s increased support of the Workshops comes at a time of renewal and growth for the school, with new programs in multimedia, animation, and book arts and design. The 2008 schedule includes close to 450 classes in programs offered year-round. “Canon’s gift comes at an ideal time for our future planning for programs and the campus,” says Workshops Executive Director, Charles Altschul, “With their increased support, we can continue to offer students cutting-edge technology while also investing in upgrades to our classrooms and facilities. This is indeed exciting news and a great vote of confidence in our future from an industry leader.” Multimedia Workshop Takes to the Streets of New York
The course began with what makes multimedia such a compelling storytelling medium. Bob covered field recording, interviewing techniques and sound editing using software called Audacity. Along with sound recording and editing to learn, there were stories to be found, interviews to tape, and images to make that would complement the audio component of the New York street stories. The 8-day workshop stressed story, story content, and the use of sound to create an impression of “being there.” Stories included a Bosnian artist living in Brooklyn, a street musician named One Leg Chuck who frequents the Union Square subway station, and an Asian woman working as a valet dry cleaner in midtown. Multimedia is an alternative to video, is less costly to produce, less time-consuming in the editing phase, and is now a major provider of content for on-line newspapers. Bob, who has been steeped in traditional visual storytelling, is now editing for MediaStorm, a major player in the multimedia explosion. Bob leads the Leaping into Digital workshop in Rockport this summer, helping photographers make the transition from film to the digital workflow. Joe is a great teacher. Open, honest, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the art and craft of photography. Joe is a problem solver who builds photographs brick by brick. Studying everything, engaging his subject, using all his tools; it is like watching someone put a puzzle together. His new book, The Moment It Clicks, combines a great selection of images, with his anecdotal stories, and technical descriptions of how they were made. Joe has balanced the book, carefully selecting every image to cover a wide range of situations, to help fellow photographers through the "peaks and valleys" of freelance photography. He has thirty years of experience shooting in over fifty countries to glean from. Working for Life, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and lots of Fortune 500 companies. In "Joe talk", the lessons include: "Basic human interaction trumps everything;” “Zoom with your feet;” “Shoot it now;” “The most important asset is your attitude". There are lots more clearly presented. Buy the book for it's great photographs, because you want to learn about being a photographer, or about being a parent. To learn about lighting, and what to pack in your camera bag. To learn a few tricks, or about light. Learn how to shoot what you love, and to convey what you want to say in a photo. A great book by a great photographer at the top of his game.
